Mozambique – HBV and HCV Disease Burden and Economic Impact

CDA Foundation (CDAF), through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mozambique Ministry of Health (MoH), is working closely with the MoH to develop strategies for eliminating hepatitis in the country. The MoH, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO AFRO) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been working on a Plan of Action and Guidelines to support elimination of hepatitis in Mozambique by 2030.

To aid the MoH in developing elimination strategies, CDAF’s Polaris Observatory team traveled to Mozambique and convened collaborative meetings with MoH, WHO representatives, local experts and stakeholders to develop a better understanding of HBV and HCV disease epidemiology, disease burden and economic impact. Despite limited availability of published data, the group of experts were able to achieve consensus on updated prevalence estimates for HBV and HCV, and participants agreed that the work was essential for developing an informed elimination plan.

Based on the conclusions from this meeting, MoH will update the Plan of Action and Guidelines with the new HBV and HCV estimates in support of strategy implementation, including development of a Harm Reduction Plan and use of direct acting anti-virals (DAAs).
This project was funded through a scholarship awarded to Mozambique Ministry of Health (MoH) by CDAF.
