CDA Foundation (CDAF) has been working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO EURO) over the past several years to identify the burden of HCV and HBV in Ukraine. Following assessments by both The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and WHO EURO, the Ukraine Ministry of Health committed to develop a national strategy for the elimination of viral hepatitis.
To aid the ministry in the development of their strategy, CDAF, with support from World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) collaborated with local hepatitis experts and stakeholders to analyze epidemiology and develop disease burden models for both HBV and HCV. CDAF’s Polaris Observatory team convened with the Public Health Center Ukraine, the Alliance for Public Health, as well as local hepatologists and physicians to first quantify the disease burden and then develop elimination strategies. The effort focused on the development of strategies towards achieving the WHO 2030 Elimination targets. Given the high rates of infection in Ukraine, as well as significant government and cost barriers, additional scenarios were considered with more achievable goals. The conclusions from this collaborative effort were included in the draft of the National Strategy towards elimination of viral hepatitis, which is currently undergoing review by the Ministry of Health Ukraine.
