Les deux maladies sont responsables d&#039;environ un million de d\u00e9c\u00e8s par an et 78 pour cent des carcinomes h\u00e9patocellulaires dans le monde et plus de la moiti\u00e9 de toutes les cirrhoses mortelles. En 2013, l&#039;h\u00e9patite virale, dont le virus de l&#039;h\u00e9patite B (VHB) et le virus de l&#039;h\u00e9patite C (VHC) sont les types les plus courants, a d\u00e9pass\u00e9 le VIH et le sida pour devenir la septi\u00e8me cause de d\u00e9c\u00e8s dans le monde. Le monde dispose d\u00e9sormais des outils n\u00e9cessaires pour pr\u00e9venir l&#039;h\u00e9patite B et gu\u00e9rir l&#039;h\u00e9patite C. Une vaccination parfaite pourrait \u00e9radiquer le VHB, mais cela prendrait au moins deux g\u00e9n\u00e9rations. En attendant, il n&#039;existe aucun rem\u00e8de pour les millions de personnes d\u00e9j\u00e0 infect\u00e9es. \u00c0 l&#039;inverse, il n&#039;y a pas de vaccin contre le VHC, mais de nouveaux antiviraux \u00e0 action directe peuvent gu\u00e9rir 95% des infections chroniques, bien que ces m\u00e9dicaments n&#039;atteignent pas de si t\u00f4t toutes les personnes infect\u00e9es de fa\u00e7on chronique.
